Shadedmoon’s List of Foods Toxic to Dogs
Many people feed their dogs scraps from the table without ever realising
that what might be good for people may be toxic to dog’s causing ill
health and some can even be fatal. Below is a list of some of the foods
that are known to be toxic or harmful to dogs. Italian Greyhounds are
very slender with small stomach’s so may be at greater risk due to their
size from some foods that may not have noticeable effects on other
larger built breeds, therefore it is necessary to take extra care of what your iggy is eating
and scavenging. If your dog shows any signs of illness you should seek
advice from your veterinarian

Alcohol
Possible Effects: intoxication,
coma and death.
Avocado
Possible Effects:
difficulty breathing, build up of fluid in the
chest, abdomen and heart, pancreatitis
Baby
Food
Possible Effects:
nutritional deficiencies if fed in large amounts
and can also contain onion powder which is toxic to dogs.

Bones (cooked chicken, fish etc.)
Possible Effects:
obstruction, splintering and tearing of internal
organs/digestive system
Broccoli
Possible Effects:
If fed in very large quantities can be toxic
causing intestinal irritation.

Caffeine
(in coffee or tea, and possibly slimming tablets)
Possible Effects:
stimulates the heart and nervous system causing
vomiting, heart palpitations and even death.

Cat
Food
Possible Effects:
high in protein and fats, obesity and hyperactivity
Chocolate (contains theobromine)
Possible Effects:
vomiting, heart palpitations, seizures, coma and death. A very small amount of dark chocolate can
kill a dog. But any chocolate in large amounts can lead to death.
Citrus

Possible Effects: vomiting
Corn
on the Cob
Possible Effects:
the most common cause of intestinal blockage, can
cause death.
Dairy
Products
Possible Effects:
Pancreatitis, wind and diarrhoea
Egg
Whites (contains avidin a protein)
Possible Effects:
depletion of Biotin a B vitamin, causing hair loss,
weakness, growth retardation and skeletal deformity

Fat
Trimmings
Possible Effects:
in large quantities
pancreatitis
Fruit
pips and stones
Possible Effects:
contain the poison cyanide
Grains
Possible Effects: in large amounts can cause rice is generally safe
in small amounts
Grapes
and Raisins
Possible Effects:
kidney failure, a small amount of raisins can kill.
Ham
and Bacon
Possible Effects: pancreatitis, high salt content may cause large
dogs to drink to much water leading to bloat.
Hops
Possible Effects:
panting, increased
heart rate, high temperature, seizures, death.
Vitamin

Possible Effects:
damage to digestive systems, toxic to other organs
including the liver and kidneys
Liver
Possible Effects:
Raw or too much –Vitamin A toxicity, deformed bone
growth, weight loss, anorexia
Macadamia
Nuts
Possible Effects:
toxin which can affect digestive and nervous
systems, temporary muscle tremor and paralasys
Marijuana
Possible Effects: depresses the nervous system, elevated heart rate
and vomiting.
Milk
Possible Effects:
Some dogs do not have enough of the enzyme lactase
so cannot tolerate lactose. Can cause diarrhoea.
Mouldy
Food
Possible Effects:
can contain toxins causing vomiting and diarrhoea.
Mushrooms
Possible Effects: can contain toxins, causing abdominal pain,
drooling, liver damage, kidney damage, vomiting diarrhoea, convulsions,
coma, shock and death depending on the variety, wild mushrooms have
potentially more serious effects.
Nutmeg
Possible Effects:
tremors, seizures and death
Onions
and Garlic
Possible Effects:
anaemia, garlic is less toxic than onions

Pennies
Possible Effects:
kidney failure, damage to red blood cells can be
fatal if not removed.
Persimmons
Possible Effects:
seeds can cause intestinal obstruction and
enteritis
Peach/Plum
Pits
Possible Effects:
obstruction of the digestive system
Potato,
Rhubarb and Tomato leaves
Possible Effects: can affect the digestive, nervous and urinary
systems
Raw
Eggs
Possible Effects:
can decrease the absorption of biotin causing skin
and coat problems, also potentially contain Salmonella

Possible Effects:
thiamine (B vitamin) deficiency, suppressed appetite, seizures and death if fed regularly.
Salt
Possible Effects:
in excess, electrolyte and kidney problems, leading
to excessive water drinking which in large breeds could cause bloat.

obesity, dental disease and potentially diabetes.

Possible Effects:
affects the digestive and nervous systems, rapid
heartbeat, collapse, coma and death.

Possible Effects:
tremors, heart arrhythmias.

drop in blood sugar, loss of coordination, seizures
and potentially without treatment death.
